We’re proud to announce the start of a new SAMBO class, beginning Wednesday April 11th. This class will be taught by our very own MEBJJ affiliate, Grant Gilliam of Eclectic Combat Systems in Pflugerville. Grant hold the rank of Nidan in Judo (2nd degree Black Belt),
Sandan in Nihon Ju-Jitsu (3Rd Degree Black Belt) & Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and is an active student of Mario Esfiha.Grant is also a nationally certified Freestyle Sambo referee and runs one of the nations hightest rated ASA Sambo schools.Sambo is a form of sport and self-defense established in the former Soviet Union during the early twentieth century. Sambo is an acronym for “SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya” or “Self-defense without weapons.” Very similar in principle to Western Grappling and Mixed Martial Arts, Combat Sambo is known for strong transitions between all ranges of combat and devastating ground techniques with a heavy emphasis on leg locks . After generations of refinement, Sambo has evolved into an extremely formidable fighting art with principles applicable to martial artists of any style especially Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Sambo’s arsenal includes, but is not limited to, strikes, joint locks, chokes, throws, ground fighting, and weapons. Like all fighting systems, Sambo continues to grow and evolve in both its sport and combat variants.

The Evolution of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Today’s Uses
In 1914 a Japanese Judo and Jiu-Jitsu master named Mitsuo Maeda traveled to Brazil. In return for help from a Brazilian politician, Maeda taught jiu-jitsu to one of his sons, Carlos Gracie, who then shared these techniques with his brother Helio. These brothers went on to further refine the art via constant no-rules competition and practice, developing what would come to be known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Subsequently all varieties of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu evolved from there. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) diverged from traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu because of its unique approach to applying the techniques. Instead of relying on elements like speed and strength, BJJ uses the principles of leverage and position in its application to overcome an opponent. Since the BJJ practitioner is not trying to match the speed or strength of his/her opponent, it is easier for a much smaller person who understands BJJ to control and defeat a larger or stronger opponent. BJJ teaches its practitioners a variety of chokes and joint locks that can be used to subdue an attacker. BJJ is different than other martial arts because the need for striking an opponent is minimized or often eliminated. The BJJ player aims to “close the distance” between him/herself and the opponent to get in close and bring the situation down to the ground, where grappling techniques can be employed most effectively using leverage. BJJ views this as practical theory, since most physical conflicts or attacks end up on the ground. We base and teach these same principals here in Austin available to you now.
Functional Training:
Most other Martial Arts teach destructive techniques such as striking or gouging opponents. It is therefore very difficult to functionally train for this without injury to oneself or ones training partners, so the result is that the student does not get the practice necessary to know whether or not the techniques being studied will work in a real life physical confrontation. BJJ is different, since during grappling practice the practitioners can choose the tempo that works best for them during the sparring session. BJJ players can therefore practice with more realistic intensity, applying their techniques right up to the point when their training partner taps. If a training partner feels discomfort from a joint lock or choke, he or she simply taps their hand and the action is stopped instantly. At Mario’s program, students are free to train at a pace of their own choosing, allowing the student to determine the level of physicality in their training. BJJ is the ultimate mind and body game of chess – a thinking person’s Art. The combinations and cycles of the techniques taught afford a BJJ practitioner the distinct advantage to the think sharper when it matters most. The mental and physical exercises that a BJJ player experiences in class provide focus and activity, both of which are excellent for promoting health while reducing stress.
Self Defense:
With Mario’s Program, real world self defense for the street is a primary objective. To meet this goal, Mario offers instruction in a variety of closely related styles including No-Gi Submission Grappling, Classic Wrestling, Japanese Judo, Boxing, Kick Boxing, Muay Thai and the US Army’s own Modern Army Combatives Program. The techniques that are taught in Mario’s academy can be easily learned and applied by women, children, or people in their later years. Along with the confidence and peace of mind that comes with practicing BJJ, practitioners enjoy a higher level of overall fitness, benefiting from the increased lean muscle mass and cardio vascular endurance that this hobby naturally helps to develop.
